THE COMPLEXITY OF FUNERALS IN NIGERIA

I entered a shop a while ago and this lady was telling her friend that her brother in-law was dead. Immediately she said this, I instantly felt sympathy and even a little bit of empathy, after all the death of a loved one can be a difficult thing to bear. However, my feelings of sympathy and empathy quickly developed wings when the next thing I heard was, “why the man kon die now? This period wey money no dey.”  In hindsight, I find it a …

WHAT’S RIGHT WITH FEMINISM

Still in honor of South Africa’s women’s month. I wrote about the beauty of womanhood and how I loved being female yesterday. I felt as though every woman must love being a woman; that every girl must see and appreciate femininity. Thinking on though, I realized that this was not the case. There are women around the world who curse femininity every day; women who can’t appreciate the beauty of being a woman because of the people around them. So many Nigerians (especially the men) …

FEMININITY IN ALL ITS GLORY

So this month is South Africa’s women’s month and i salute them for setting aside a month to celebrate the beauty of womanhood. in honor of this, I’m reposting this. So today is International Women’s Day. This inspired me to tell you about how I feel about womanhood and trust me I think and appreciate feminism and femininity every day. I love being female! There are moments when some women say or think to themselves, “if only I were a man.” Now I can’t say …

CRAZINESS IN A SUIT

As uncivilised as they say Nigeria is, I’m still grateful for this nation. For one thing, it’s usually easy to identify a mad man. For the westerners, it’s not quite as easy. The really mad people wear suits and carry briefcases and seem very normal. A true case of ‘all that glitters ain’t gold’. They appear “civilized” on the outside but are really twisted upstairs. They really have the worst cases of mental disorders. Now I don’t mean to mock them or make light of …

TILL DEATH DO US PART; 20 TIPS FOR A LONG AND HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

NEVER ASSUME NOR JUMP TO CONCLUSION, LEARN TO COMMUNICATE This is my first tip because this is the reason people make so many mistakes. ‘OH! He is not calling me! he must be cheating on me!’ PLEASE DONT DO THAT! Never assume anything. Do not jump into conclusions. Learn to communicate at all times. Talk to your partner everyday and when you start having doubts about him/her. Please talk about it. If you are still very suspicious, then you can conduct a very private investigation, …

PEOPLE OF COLOUR

The typical definition of a person of colour is someone who is not white or of European heritage. My first thought then is, when did white stop being a colour? Addressing only blacks as people of colour is very absurd to me. As far as I’m concerned, whites, blacks, browns, and whatever colour people choose to place themselves under all come under the phrase, “people of colour”. Therefore addressing only blacks with that phrase makes me feel as though the whites still believe that …

LIVING NOW…

At virtually every point in our lives, we’re all waiting for something. As a primary school student, you can’t wait to be in secondary school. When you’re in secondary school, you can’t wait to be in the university. In the university, you still can’t wait to leave and begin to start making your own money. When you do leave and start working, you can’t wait to get married. When you’re married you can’t wait to give birth. When you give birth, you can’t wait for …

LOVE….REALLY?

As a child, I really and I mean really really loved cartoons. I loved every kind, especially the fairy tale kind; the Cinderella, the snow white, beauty and the beast, just to name a few. I liked the romance of it all. I loved how they dressed, how they talked and even how they twirled, it was just this magical place I wanted to experience. I did like other cartoons and I kept looking for that bit of romance in them all. As I grew …

THE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT ME

Some days I go out and everywhere I go, someone’s always like, “Oh, you look really pretty today” and another person teases and is like, “eh eh oh, fine girl”. Most times, I just smile and say thanks, coz duhh, I did see myself in the mirror before going out; however, some other days I’m genuinely shocked and flattered, not because I didn’t look in the mirror before leaving but because I actually did. Let me explain, it’s possible that that particular day, I rushed …

IT’S JUST NOT FUNNY

I’m not afraid to say that I have a very weird sense of humour and it’s quite difficult for a stand-up comedian to make me laugh out really loud. I can smile and nod, appreciating your art but I most likely will not laugh so hard that I bang my feet on the ground and slap my knee. The truth is, to me, some jokes are just not funny. And not only are they not funny, but they annoy me and I find them quite …
